Including & Excluding Empty Grades in Moodle

There are primarily two methods of displaying/calculating grades.

(1) Exclude empty grades

This is the method we usually recommend. It gives your students a consistent running total for their grades based on the number of points they have attempted at a specific point in time. It works well for instructors who keep their grades updated in Moodle throughout the term, and it tends to be preferred by most students. For this to properly calculate, the instructor must fill in a zero point (0) for every assignment that was not, or will not be give credit in order to count against the student. This is why percentages can appear artificially inflated if each grade item does not have a numerical value and shows a dash (-).

(2) Include empty grades

This method works well if an instructor doesn't wish to enter in a zero grade as Moodle treats each empty grade as a 0; however, students do not receive an accurate grade percentage displayed in Moodle until the end of the term. As you can imagine, this can cause problems (and sometimes panic!) as students do not have an accurate idea of where they stand in the course.

Both methods must be fully understood by the instructor, and grades should be regularly updated as doing so will best benefit the student.

Private Replies in Moodle Advanced Forums

An instructor posed a question to me:

"I… would like to give my students feedback on their initial posts. Do you know how I can set it up so that I can interact with the students about their posts in a private way?"

I knew there was a way to enable private replies in a Moodle forum, and I found it.

NOTE: This feature is only available in the Advanced Forum, and not in the "standard" Moodle Forum.

Navigate to the Advanced Forum settings, and look for the "Post options" section. Check the "Allow private replies" checkbox, and then save your changes at the bottom:

When you want to make a private reply to a forum post, be sure to click the "Private reply" checkbox at the bottom right:

And that's all there is to it!

Why Are Moodle Quiz Grades Hidden for Students?

Question: Why are the attempted quiz grades for students not appearing in their grade book view?

Answer: Often times, this is due to the settings of the quiz itself. There are two locations to check that can force the quiz grades into visible status for students:

The Review Options are incorrect
  1. Navigate to the course in which the quiz appears
  2. Navigate to the quiz and click on the title to enter the quiz
  3. Click on Edit Settings from the Admin Block
  4. Navigate to Review Options and click to expand the menu
  • Under During the Attempt, make sure that the attempt has a check mark next to it.  As a best practice, it is recommended to select all options by placing a check mark next to each option
  • Under Immediately After the Attempt, place a check mark next to each option
  • Under Later, While the Quiz is Still Open, place a check mark next to each option
  • Under After the Quiz is Closed, place a check mark next to each option
       5.  Navigate to Common Module Settings and click to expand the menu
       6.  Using the drop-down menu, choose Show under the Visible section
       7.  Click Save Changes

Setting up a quiz with these settings will ensure that a quiz, once attempted by students, will display the grade for the quiz to students in their grade book view.

Moodle Recycle Bin

We are happy to report that our Moodle system now has a recycle bin! If you have ever deleted an Activity or Resource from your Moodle shell, and later wished you could get it back, now you will have up to 30 days to restore it into your course.

You will see the link to the recycle bin in the Administration block in your Moodle course shell:

It's easy to restore an item:

Note that when you restore an Activity or Resource, it will reappear at the bottom of the content section where it previously resided, not its original position.

Let us know how you like this new feature!

Choosing A Course Format In Moodle

"The vast majority of Moodle courses apply the weekly format, probably because it is the most similar to a physical classroom experience. This is understandable, and preferable as long as an LMS technology is brought to support modern pedagogical efforts."

The Perfect eLearning Course?

What I'm reading today:

The Perfect e-Learning Course™ is a legendary creature that changes its shape with each new technological and aesthetic trend. It is all things to all people – classic, yet also fresh, modern, and applicable to all levels of learner experience and skill. I’ve even heard that, when you measure the readability of such a course, the scale doesn’t give you a grade level. It just says “Awesome.”

Instant Rewards of Teaching in Moodle

From "Teaching with Moodle for total beginners"

  • saving time and money on photocopying course materials
  • less paperwork (or paper marking) to carry with you
  • less correcting (marking) overall
  • richer and more interactive homework and/or assignments
  • formal evaluation of discussion skills and contributions (some students excel here whilst performing poorly elsewhere)
  • a wider range of deep-learning activities to stretch more able students
  • having all your detailed feedback about the targets you have set stored in the Gradebook automatically, not lost on the one paper copy of the essay, which you handed back to the student.

When Emailing Us About Your Moodle Course…

… please include a link to your course shell. There are over 3200 course shells on our Moodle system, and it often takes us longer to locate the shell in question than to solve the issue. If your question/issue involves a specific resource or activity within your course shell, please make sure we know where to look, as well. Helping us help you will get solutions delivered more effectively and efficiently.

Thank you!

"I Can't See My Moodle Course!"

We get a lot of calls from instructors at the beginning of each term asking for help accessing their Moodle courses. The vast majority of the time, they are looking in the "Courses Available to Students" block…

… and their course shell is set to be unavailable to students, and thus won't appear in this block. We advise getting in the habit of using the "My Courses" link in the Navigation block:

You can also bookmark the start page of your Moodle course(s) in your browser for one-click access any time.
