#1 - "Self-Directed Learning" Increases
Due to economic pressures, companies are going to reduce training budgets to a point where it doesn't make sense to create content on marginal topics. Instead, we will call this "self-directed learning" and will do our best to support the workforce to learn it on their own with minimal guidance and support.

* Mayor Sharon Konopa, Albany
* David Van't Hof, Sustainability Advisory to Governor Kulongoski

Visit the LBCC National Teach-In Blog for more information, and to learn how you can submit questions and comments to the panel.

LBCC is Now on Twitter!
"What is this 'Twitter' thing I have been hearing about?" is a question I have been asked a lot in recent months. The ironic thing is, even while I try to answer that question, I am still asking it of myself. Twitter may best be described as a casual mix of the best features of an email, blog and instant messaging tool, with many of the benefits and few of the negative of each.
When I first started my personal Twitter account (believe me, you don't want to see it) a few months ago, it instantly occurred to me that Twitter is one of those things that you immediately "get" or "don't get" right off the bat.
Twitter submissions have a 140 character limit, so you will need to economize your thoughts, and you will never have a huge amount to read from comments of people you "follow." Wait a minute, what does it mean to "follow" someone on Twitter? I could explain here, or you could get more of a hands-on feel for Twitter by visiting Linn-Benton Community College's Twitter page.
Enjoy, and Tweet away!

Use Google Docs While You're Offline!
Google Docs now allows you to view and edit your word processing documents offline, without an Internet connection. When you aren't connected to the Internet, Google Docs uses information stored on your computer's hard drive rather than relying on information sent across the network. When you are offline, your edits are stored on your own computer until you re-connect, at which point your changes are synced with Google Docs' servers and made available to collaborators.

PDF Hosting at Scribd.com
A lot of LBCC Faculty and Staff are getting into Google Apps for Education to host documents, spreadsheets and presentations, but what about PDFs? Google Docs allows you to share PDFs with other users, but currently doesn't allow you to deploy them as a URL like you can with other document types.
Enter Scribd.com. Although it's not the only hosting solution for PDF documents, it's one of the best we have seen, offering the ability to view your documents in three unique views: List, Book, and Slide mode. You can also embed a PDF to render directly in a web page. See the example below, making sure to explore the view modes via the "iPaper" drop-down menu.
Try Scribd; we think you'll like it!
